t. e. The self-ionization of water (also autoionization of water, and autodissociation of water, or simply dissociation of water) is an ionization reaction in pure water or in an aqueous solution, in which a water molecule, H 2 O, deprotonates (loses the nucleus of one of its hydrogen atoms) to become a hydroxide ion, OH −.

  • In chemistry, hydronium (hydroxonium in traditional British English) is the common name for the aqueous cation H3O+, the type of oxonium ion produced by protonation of water.

    Describe the autoionization of water. Calculate the concentrations of H3O+ H 3 O + and OH− OH − in aqueous solutions, knowing the other concentration. We have already seen that H2O H 2 O can act as an acid or a base: NH3 base +H2O acid ↽−−⇀ NH+4 +OH− NH 3 ⏟ base + H 2 O ⏟ acid ↽ − − ⇀ NH 4 + + OH −.

The number of H3O+ and OH- ions formed by the ionisation of pure water must be equal (from the equation): [H3O+] = [OH-] = 10^-7). This shows that pure water is neither acidic or basic, it is neutral. The product of [H3O+] = [OH-] is the ionic product of water. [H3O+][OH-]=10^-7 × 10^-7 = 10^

The hydronium ion is an important factor when dealing with chemical reactions that occur in aqueous solutions. Its concentration relative to hydroxide is a direct measure of the pH of a solution. It can be formed when an acid is present in water or simply in pure water. It's chemical formula is H3O+ H 3 O +.

The concept of the hydronium ion has been known since the 19th century. In the s, Swedish physicist/chemist Svante Arrhenius, working with German chemist Wilhelm Ostwald, defined an acid as a substance that dissociates in water to form hydrogen ions, which protonate water to form hydronium ions. Protonating acids became known as Arrhenius.
